It's a Dirty Job...

Read By: Kim Ayres
Written By: Kim Ayres
Length: 1m 32s
Introduction: Mary first saw a version of this story when I submitted it to a Flash Fiction competition, and Eryl first heard it when I used it at a Storytellers' Workshop we were both on last year. I originally wrote it in a cartoon strip format over 20 years ago, but keep coming back to it and the questions it raises.

Gripping! It does raise questions and I don't know the answers. Well read!

Great story. And if it didn't win first place in flash fiction, the contest was rigged.

Glad I'm not a philosopher. That is a lot of responsibility.

Pat - thank you :)

Carole - I'm afraid I didn't even get listed in the 10 runners up. I might have if Mary had voted for me - but I'll leave her to squirm and explain why she didn't... ;)

I think the contest was rigged too. When I first saw this one, I thought to myself, 'Oh hell -- he'll get first prize for sure.'

Yes, I squirm, I squirm! All I can say is that when I saw that everyone could see who had voted for them, I felt too embarrassed to cast my vote -- which I didn't really know how to do in any case (you should have seen how much trouble I had just posting my own pieces). The worst thing was afterwards, when I found that you had voted for one of my stories. I knew I couldn't tell you that I had almost voted for yours -- no, you wouldn't have believed me.

I've learned from it: next time, I'll vote. Another thing I've learned is that the people who judge writing contests have an agenda. And if you don't fit into their agenda, tough luck. S i g h.

Sam - thank you too :)

Mary - I don't mind whether you would have voted for me or not, but I do appreciate you saying you would have :)
