Oh dear Pat, what a beautiful story. I remember when you posted it on PI ages ago but it's a delight to hear it on here.
You really have a gift for storytelling - we get just the right amount of just the right kind of detail to make it come alive, but never so much that it's stodgy. You struck the poignant note at the end just exquisitely. And all the best stories have secret compartments!

I was wondering where I'd read that story before - of course, on your blog! This weekend of all weekends we consider the pointlessness of war, and wonder why we're still doing it.
Very touching story Pat, and would that your dear Grandson does NOT have go to 'the front', wherever that might be while he is in the Army. He actually wants to join. He is a true patriot, I gather....May God keep him safe and sound.

This brought tears to my eyes too.
I've just been looking at a photograph of the Manila American cemetery with thousands upon thousands of white crosses and Stars of David, as far as the eye can see. It really gets to me.
'King and country' sounds wonderfully grand until you consider the misery and squalor of the deaths, and the sheer waste of all those bright young lives.
