Oh dear Pat, what a beautiful story. I remember when you posted it on PI ages ago but it's a delight to hear it on here.

You really have a gift for storytelling - we get just the right amount of just the right kind of detail to make it come alive, but never so much that it's stodgy. You struck the poignant note at the end just exquisitely. And all the best stories have secret compartments!

What a lucky grandson you have.

Wonderful story Pat

Pat, you've managed to do in about three minutes what it took Ian McEwan almost four hundred pages to do with Atonement.

Love the voice too!

Thank you Sam and Kim.

Eryl: recently I saw Atonement and got a feeling of deja vu. However I wrote it years ago and it was published in a local magazine. Wonder if he saw it:)

I was wondering where I'd read that story before - of course, on your blog! This weekend of all weekends we consider the pointlessness of war, and wonder why we're still doing it.

Very touching story Pat, and would that your dear Grandson does NOT have go to 'the front', wherever that might be while he is in the Army. He actually wants to join. He is a true patriot, I gather....May God keep him safe and sound.

I love hearing you read your stories....That is a great gift to all of us who know and love you halfway round the world, my dear. MORE, Please!

What a great story. We don't have the phrase "For King and Country" here. It sure sounds majestic.

What a wistful and well-crafted bit of writing. Good to discover The Storytellers' Blog, too.

This brought tears to my eyes too.

I've just been looking at a photograph of the Manila American cemetery with thousands upon thousands of white crosses and Stars of David, as far as the eye can see. It really gets to me.

'King and country' sounds wonderfully grand until you consider the misery and squalor of the deaths, and the sheer waste of all those bright young lives.

Oh this was wonderful Pat! Naughty old McEwan! So glad to have found your 'other' blog - look forward to listening to all the tales. Had been wondering how to podcast - you're all very clever, will enjoy learning.
